History
The Sands Anderson PC law firm traces its beginning to the law practice of Alexander Hamilton Sands (1828-1887). On May 23, 1842, Mr. Sands moved to Richmond, Virginia to work in the law office of his brother William G. Sands, who not only practiced law but was the Clerk of the Superior Court of Law and Chancery of the City of Richmond.
On May 8, 1851, Mr. Sands married Ella Virginia Goddin, a daughter of Wellington and Eliza P. Goddin. They had thirteen children, one of whom was also named Alexander H. Sands. Their fourth child, Conway Robinson Sands (1860-1920) was also a lawyer who maintained an office in the Travellers Building and served as a Virginia Senator from 1883-1884 and 1893-1898.
According to the Richmond Directory of 1860, Mr. Sands was a partner of John Howard in the Richmond law firm of Howard and Sands with offices in the Goddin building (owned by his father-in-law).
In the early 1880s, Mr. Sands practiced law with his son Conway in a firm known as Sands & Sands, and he continued the practice of law up until shortly before his death on December 22, 1887.
In the early twentieth century, Mr. Sands' son Alexander began practicing law with his brother Conway in a firm known as Sands & Sands. After Conway stopped practicing, Alex Sands formed the firm of Sands and Lightfoot, which later became Sands, Williams and Lightfoot. At one point, he served as Commonwealth's Attorney of the City of Richmond, in addition to conducting his private practice, and he worked as a criminal defense lawyer after he resigned as Commonwealth's Attorney.
When Alex Sands' son, also Alexander H. Sands, graduated from law school in the 1930s he joined his father's practice, forming the firm of Sands & Sands. When the younger Sands joined the Navy at the beginning of World War II, Edward A. Marks, Jr. left Christian and Barton to join the elder Sands. When the younger Sands returned from the War, the firm of Sands, Marks & Sands was formed. That firm grew and became Sands, Marks, Sands, Henning & Sydnor.
In 1960, the younger Mr. Sands was appointed to the bench of the Law and Equity Court of the City of Richmond, and A. Scott Anderson and J. Calvitt Clarke, Jr. left Bowles, Anderson, Boyd, Clarke & Herrod. Eventually Messrs. Anderson and Clarke joined Mr. Marks and the elder Sands to form Sands, Anderson, Marks & Clarke, whose offices were initially in the American Building. In June 1962, Frank B. Miller, III joined Sands, Anderson, Marks & Clarke as an associate.
In 1967 the elder Sands, who practiced law into his 90s, died. Also in 1967, the firm moved its offices to the Fidelity Building (now One Capitol Square) at Ninth and Main Streets. Cal Clarke went on the federal bench in Norfolk on January 1, 1975, and the firm became Sands, Anderson & Marks for a short while before becoming Sands, Anderson, Marks & Miller.
In 1981, the firm which had grown significantly in large measure due to its growing reputation in complex litigation, moved its offices from the Fidelity Building to 629 E. Main Street, the former headquarters of Southern States Cooperative. On June 1, 1986, Woodward & Lacy was merged into Sands, Anderson, Marks & Miller, a number of lawyers from White, Cabell, Paris and Lowenstein joined the firm, and they moved their offices to the Ross Building.
In March 2000 they moved their Richmond offices from the Ross Building to the top three floors of WyteStone Plaza. They opened a North Carolina Office on March 1, 2001, and a Fredericksburg Office on October 1, 2001, and on May 1, 2003, the lawyers of Schraub & Howell Chtd. joined the firm to form a Northern Virginia Headquarters. In 2010, the firm changed its name to Sands Anderson PC.
